What once looked like a very promising season after a 4-0 start has quickly slipped away as the Arizona Cardinals have fallen to 4-5 following a five game losing streak. The Cardinals are coming off their bye week and are in Atlanta to play the 8-1 Atlanta Falcons, who suffered their first loss of the season just one week ago. The Falcons have the seventh ranked offense and the sixth ranked defense, they are one of the most balanced teams in the league, but Saints proved last week, they certainly aren’t unstoppable.

The Cardinals don’t have a balanced team, in fact they struggle to score, and to get yards on offense, they are 31st in both categories. Their first four wins, the Cardinals didn’t score less than 20 points in any of their games, but since then, they haven’t scored more than 17 points. With a dominant defense that is the fifth ranked defense in the NFL, they have had no trouble stopping their opponents, but they need to start scoring again in order to turn their season around.

The key to this game for the Cardinals is for them to establish a running game with LaRod Stephens-Howling, this will open up the passing game and allow Larry Fitzgerald to have more opportunities to exploit weaker coverage. But until the running game is established, it’s likely that the Falcons defensive game plan is build around limiting Larry Fitzgerald and making either Kolb or Skelton, and the other receivers beat them.

Cards Fall to Bills in OT

The Cardinals lost a close game Sunday against the Bills, losing in overtime, 19-16.  Arizona’s Jay Feely made a franchise-record 61-yard field goal with 1:09 left in regulation to tie it 16-all. But his 38-yard attempt to win it as the fourth quarter ended was tipped by Buffalo’s Alex Carrington and careened off the left upright.  ”You go from on top of the world to feeling about as low as you can feel,” Feely said.

The Cardinals (4-2) lost their second in a row after a 4-0 start.  The Cardinals went into overtime for the sixth time in their last nine home games and had won all of them until Sunday.

The big kick came moments after Kolb, whose scrambles had been the biggest plays for Arizona’s as-usual sputtering offense, was hit for his fifth sack and left with a rib and chest injury.  Skelton, active for the first time since he sprained his left ankle in the season opener, an injury that cleared the way for Kolb to reclaim the starting job.  Skelton’s fourth-down pass to Fitzgerald got Arizona close enough to try the record kick, which cleared the crossbar with room to spare.  ”He told me he could make it,” Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “That’s why we kicked it there on fourth-and-10. I thought our best option was for him to kick it with the way he was feeling.”

Kolb was 14 of 26 128 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He scrambled five times for 66 yards. Arizona’s running game struggled without Ryan WIlliams after he was knocked out for the season with a shoulder injury.  The Cards got a surprising day from William Powell who gained 70 yards on 13 carries.  Fitzgerald caught six passes for 93 yards, including a 9-yarder for a touchdown. In the process, he topped 10,000 yards receiving for his career even though he’s 10 months shy of his 30th birthday.

The Cardinals take on the Vikings in Minnesota Sunday.

Cards Fall to Rams

The Cardinals entered Thursday nights game against the Rams with a spotless record.  After four quarters of football that record now has a blemish on it.  The Rams were able to completely shut down the Cardinals beating them 17-3.  The Cardinals had scored at least 20 points in the teams first four games, but struggled to get any offense going against the Rams.  The Rams were able to continuously get past the Cardinal’s offensive line and get to Kolb, sacking him for a total of nine times.  The Rams also limited the Cardinals to 45 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Kolb managed to throw for 289 yards, however he was only able to complete 28/50 passes.  Larry Fitzgerald continued his recent strong play catching 8 passes for 92 yards while being targeted 15 times.  If the line could have held up and given Kolb a chance to find his go to wide-out then maybe the game would have turned out differently.  One positive out of all of this, is that all though Kolb was constantly pressured and knocked down, he managed to protect the ball and not commit any turnovers.

For next week the Cards need to find a way to keep Kolb upright.  If the line is unable to hold up then the team will struggled mightily.  Hopefully this beating will awaken them to a glaring weakness and will lead to the team correcting it.  The Cards have a week and a half to get everything taken care of and get refocused.  Even after the tough loss, the Cards still sit pretty with a 4-1 record.

“I didn’t like anything,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “The thing I respected is our guys didn’t quit, and even as bad as it went, we had a chance at the end of the game.”

The Cardinals take on Buffalo at home next week.

Cards vs Dolphins Recap

And just like that, the Cardinals are still perfect.  This may not have been what people expected out of this team coming into the season, but the Cardinals have yet to lose and are getting better each week.  This past week the Cards defeated the Dolphins 24-21 in overtime to keep their record flawless.  Jay Feely kicked a 46-yard field goal 6:31 into overtime to keep the Cardinals unbeaten.

The Cards forced overtime when Kolb threw a 15-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to Andre Roberts with 22 seconds to play in regulation.  “That’s how we do it,” Roberts said. “I don’t know what it is about us. We have to take it down to the last moment of the game, but we’re winning and that’s all that matters.”

The Cardinals are off to their best start since winning their first seven 38 years ago. They’ve won 9 of 11 overall and eight straight at home. Of those eight wins, five have come in overtime.  “Fortunately for us, the overtime thing continues to work for us,” Whisenhunt said. “It wasn’t pretty. We’ve got a lot of things we’ve got to correct, but there’s a lot of fight in our team. To be able to hang in there, make some plays at the end and win the game, it goes a long way to building confidence in what you can do.”

Kevin Kolb continued to improve again this week.  Kolb was 29 of 48 for 324 yards and three touchdowns, two to Roberts and one to Fitzgerald.  With the resurgence of Kolb has come great play out of Roberts and Fitz.  In addition to their touchdowns, Roberts had 6 receptions for 118 yards and Fitz ended with 8 catches for 64 yards.

“It’s not luck, I can tell you that,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “It can’t be luck as many times as we’ve been successful with that.”  The Cards will look to stay perfect this coming week against the Rams in St. Louis.

It’s All in the Cards for Arizona

October 2, 2012 in Cardinals News

It’s going to be a short week for the Arizona Cardinals, as they have to head to the Edward Jones Dome for Thursday Night Football against the St. Louis Rams. They’ll bring that vicious defense to town for a clash with their NFC West rivals, but if Sunday’s 24-21 win over the Miami Dolphins was any indication, this is a team that just has mojo going for it.

Arizona allowed QB Ryan Tannehill to throw for 431 yards on Sunday, yet two picks, the second one of which came in overtime, setup the game-winning field goal. The Cardinals have been playing with fire all year long, but they continue to prove that they can be clutch. The difference between winning and losing is slim.

The Cards should have been beaten in their only road game this year against the New England Patriots if not for a missed field goal at the gun. They too, should have been beaten by the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 had WR Braylon Edwards had a set of hands attached to his body instead of alligator arms.

We also have to remember in this one, that the Rams are a 2-2 team that could be 3-1 right now if not for a late drive mounted by the Detroit Lions in Week 1. This isn’t a given of a game by any stretch of the imagination, though it had to be penciled in as a victory a few weeks ago by the Cardinals.

The oddsmakers know that this is a dangerous road trip on a short week for Arizona, too. It is just a 2 ½-point favorite on the NFL odds against the Rams. The good news for the Cardinals though, is that they are 12-5 SU and ATS over the course of the last 17 in this series, including sweeping it last year.

Week 4: Cardinals vs. Dolphins

The Cardinals have surprised everyone, they are one of only three teams that remain undefeated after the first three weeks of the NFL season, and now they have a chance to welcome the 1-2 Dolhpins to their stadium. The Cardinals have a very good chance to walk away from the first quarter of the NFL season with a perfect 4-0 record, which is an excellent start towards what the Cardinals hope will be a playoff run. However, we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves, the Cardinals still have to beat the Miami Dolphins. Although the Dolphins aren’t the most talented team of the bunch, they are still a solid football team at 1-2. The Cardinals, however, have been simply dominant on the defensive side of the ball throughout the first three weeks of the season, they have the second ranked defense, and will look to utilize their strengths by shutting down the Dolphins today. If the Cardinals can continue to wreck havoc with their defense, then today should be a victory for the Cardinals.

Undefeated Arizona Cardinals Favored to Continue Streak Against Dolphins

September 29, 2012 in Cardinals News

Of the three remaining undefeated teams in the NFL, the Arizona Cardinals have to be considered the most unlikely. But all one has to do is take a look at the teams the Cardinals have beat this season—Seattle Seahawks, Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots—to understand Arizona is a legitimate contender.

Next up for the Cardinals is a home game against the 1-2 Dolphins where they are a 5.5-point favorites. The over/under in this likely defensive struggle is 39 points.

To that point, spurring the new dawn in Arizona has been an aggressive, athletic defense that has held sway over each of its opponents this season. Arizona’s defense was visually impressive in its win against the Eagles last week and the seasonal numbers back up the view. The Cardinals are No. 2 in the NFL picks in points allowed at 13.3 a game and its 12 sacks also rank second-best in the NFL.

Offensively, things haven’t been quite as good. Quarterback Kevin Kolb certainly provided a spark when beating his former team last week, going 17 of 24 for 222 yards with two touchdowns. With that said, the Cardinals come in ranked 31st in total offense and 29th in rushing yards in the NFL. There will need to be at least some improvement on that side, but that is always possible as long as All-Pro Larry Fitzgerald is lined up on the outside.

Arizona should also benefit this week with the addition of some key players that are returning from injury. Adrian Wilson, the Cardinals’ Pro Bowl safety, is expected to be in action as is Todd Heap, the former Pro Bowl tight end.

Despite all the good news, the Cardinals could be in serious danger of a letdown against the Dolphins following their sky-high start. Miami is 1-2 with a rookie quarterback. Arizona is not only 3-0 straight-up, but against the spread as well. It almost sounds too good for the NFL. The advice is to tread lightly if laying the 5.5 points.

Larry Fitz Sets Record

September 26, 2012 in Cardinals News

On Sunday, Larry Fitzgerald became the youngest player in NFL history to reach the 700 receptions threshold.  Fitz hauled in nine passes for 114 yards and a touchdown in the Cardinals 27-6 victory over the Eagles.  Fitzgerald entered the game only two receptions away from the 700 mark and after struggling the first few games of the season, broke out in a big way.  Fitz had his way with Nnamdi Asomugha as the offensive focal point, catching all seven of his first half passes before the Cardinals took to the running game in the second half.

Kevin Kolb has begun to show much better pocket presence and is looking more comfortable with the ball.  With Kolb gaining confidence each week and now showing a willingness to target Fitzgerald more often, we can expect more big games from Fitz in the near future.  If Kolb can remain steady and feed his number one option and the defense can continue their great play then the Cards are going to be a tough team to beat for the rest of the season.

Surprising Cardinals Using Super Defense To Get To 3-0

September 25, 2012 in Cardinals News

It probably isn’t all that much of a surprise to NFL fans that the Houston Texans are 3-0, and it would be believable to think that the Atlanta Falcons are 3-0 as well. However, had you asked those same NFL fans three weeks ago who the third and final team would be in the league to still have a spotless record, few would have even remotely thought of the Arizona Cardinals.

Yes, the Cardinals have beaten the NFL picks in all three of their games this year, and they could be on their way to great things because of their outstanding defense. That defense on Sunday changed the game against the Philadelphia Eagles when, on the final play of the first half of a game that was 17-0 at the time, sacked QB Michael Vick, forced a fumble, recovered that fumble, and brought it back to the house for a touchdown. Instead of taking a 17-3 or 17-7 lead into the locker room, the Cards were up 24-0 and never looked back.

Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt has his boys playing some massive defense right now. Arizona ranks first in the league in scoring at just 13.3 PPG, and that comes having faced a schedule that includes a Seattle Seahawks team that everyone is high on, the mighty New England Patriots, and the Eagles. Offenses are averaging just 316.3 YPG against Arizona as well.

But what makes this 3-0 mark all the more impressive is the fact that the offense is averaging just 263.3 YPG, ranking second to last in the league. The offense has a total of six touchdowns in three games, and that’s normally a recipe for disaster.

This week, Arizona gets to stay at home to take on the Miami Dolphins in what should be a game in which it should easily improve to 4-0. The Cardinals are 6 ½-point favorites on the opening NFL lines for the week.

Arizona Cardinals Look To Continue Hot Start Against Undefeated Eagles

September 22, 2012 in Cardinals Game Previews, Cardinals News

The Arizona Cardinals have been one of the biggest surprises of this young NFL season. Sparked by a strong defense, the Cardinals enter their Week Three matchup against the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles a perfect 2-0 both straight-up and against the spread. Bettors have yet to jump on the Cardinals’ bandwagon, however, as the NFL odds list the Eagles as 3.5-point road favorites against Arizona.

The Cardinals pulled off the biggest upset of the year last week when traveling to New England and pulling off the straight-up victory against the New England Patriots as 13-point underdogs. The Cardinals’ young and talented defense, which ranks 13th in the NFL, has been able to mask the deficiencies of its struggling offense thus far by being particularly strong against the run. Despite facing good running teams like the Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, the Cardinals ‘D’ held those two teams to just 3.4 yards a carry with no rushing touchdowns. Overall, the Cardinals defense has allowed just two touchdowns this season.

Notable performers for the Cardinals defensive unit include cornerback Patrick Peterson, who has allowed just one completion while being targeted 11 times; linebacker Daryl Washington, who leads the NFL with 21 solo tackles; and Calais Campbell, who was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week after collecting 10 tackles and pair of sacks against New England.

On the offensive side of the ball, things haven’t been quite as smooth for Arizona. Quarterback Kevin Kolb, the former Eagle, will again get the start this week after being at the controls in the Cardinals’ stunner against New England. Kolb has been the proverbial “game-manager” so far this season. He has taken precious few shots down the field, but has also not thrown an interception which figures to keep him in the good graces of head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Most of the money this week has landed on the Eagles as the line has moved from Eagles -3 to -3.5 this week. Philadelphia certainly has superior talent on paper and their atrocious turnover rate through the first two games figures to slow at some point. However, the Cardinals get the home crowd on their side and Kolb figures to have a little added incentive against his former team. Add the fact the line has moved off a key number and that equals tepid support for the Cardinals.
